Imani Milele is a choir that was started in 1989 with three orphans who were later adopted by Moses Mbuga of the Gospel Messengers. This became Moses' mission in Uganda as he sought to help young orphans or at-risk children overcome the damage the wars had caused on the country's citizens. Milton Obote (Obote I) deposed the King of Uganda after England gave the country their independence in 1962. In turn Idi Amin deposed Milton Obote in 1971 and took over as the president of Uganda. He had been born in Northern Uganda also, and raised in a tribe that participated in witch craft and cannabalism. Idi himself often talked of how salty human flesh tasted. During his office (1971 to 1979 he killed from 300,000 to 500,000 people, as his army would throw bodies into the forest going to Jinja or into the Nile River and Lake of Victoria. Crocodiles finally became so satiated they could no longer keep up - and bodies soon plugged the flow of the dam at Jinja. When Amin was deposed, Milton Obote assumed office as President in 1980 (Obote II). Museveni of Western Uganda claimed Obote had rigged the election and he developed an army to challenge Obote's government soldiers. The two armies generally fought in the area called the Luweero Triangle, just west of Kampala and into the Mubende District. Idi Amin's armies also continued to come down from the north to fight against both of the other two armies. With three armies coming in and out the Lugandans of Luweero Triangle soon became desparately poor. They didn't dare stay in one place long enough to raise food as they escaped invading armies. South Uganda lost another 500,000 people. After Obote was defeated Museveni took over as the president of Uganda and shortly afteward Alice Luma in 1986, objected to Museveni's leadership and started her own army to fight Museveni. She was a believable leader did better than expected but she had no weapons other than stones, hoes and machetes. She was defeated after a year of fighting. Her father tried to take over the leadership but he didn't last long. Joseph Kony then came in to take over the army's leadership. Kony was raised in the North, near Gulu, and he believed in the spirit world and witchcraft, mixed with the Old Testament beliefs. He was followed initially but his ideas became extreme even to his own army as he went into village after village capturing children and adults. Boys were taken into his army and girls became the army's sex slaves. Joseph was in power from 1987 to 2006 in Uganda before moving his army into Sudan and the Congo. The victims have been left in poverty with the average family getting $300 a year to live on and a life span that only recently has increased to 53.2 years of age.
